PROFILE OF LATE DR. SAMUEL OLURANTI ADEYEGBE, HEAD OF NIGERIA NATIONAL OFFICE OF WAEC.

 

Born on 13 th December, 1947, the late Dr. Samuel Oluranti Adeyegbe hailed from Aiyetoro, Yewa North Local Government Area, Ogun State . He attended Ago Ijaiye Primary School , Ebute-Metta, Lagos ; Egbado College , Ilaro; and Adeyemi College of Education , Ondo. He also attended the University of Lagos , where he obtained both his B.Sc (Hons) Chemistry(1973) and

M. Ed (Chemical Education) (1981). He obtained his Ph.D (Chemical Education) from the University of East Anglia , Norwich , England in 1985.

Late Dr. Adeyegbe worked as a Chemistry Teacher at Ife Girls High School , Ile-Ife (1970), Chemistry teacher under the NYSC scheme at Ohaji High School , Owerri (1973 - 1974) and Education Officer at the Federal Government College , Kaduna (1974 – 1976).

He joined the services of The West African Examinations Council (WAEC)as a Research Officer (Assistant Registrar III) on November 1, 1976. He was promoted AR II (1978), AR 1 (1980) Senior Assistant Registrar II (1981), SAR I (1984), Principal Assistant Registrar (1988), Deputy Registrar (1993), and Senior Deputy Registrar (April 1, 2000). In 1987, he received special commendation from the Registrar to Council, for outstanding performance.

Late Dr. Adeyegbe held various positions in the Council. He became the Acting Head of the Accra Department of Research Division, WAEC Headquarters, Accra, Ghana in May 1996 and was redeployed to Nigeria as the Senior Deputy Registrar/Head of Research Division and Headquarters Office, Lagos in December 1997, a post he held until he became the head of the Nigeria National Office of the Council on 17 th May, 2005.

Late Dr. Adeyegbe's appointment as Head of Nigeria National Office (HNO) was approved by the International Appointments Committee of The West African Examinations Council and ratified at the 53 rd Annual Council Meeting held on 16 th March, 2005 in Monrovia, Liberia.

The late HNO won various academic honours, prizes, and awards. These include: the Western Region of Nigeria Scholarship (1963 – 1965); Federal Government of Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship (1970 – 1973); the “Tafawa Balewa Trust Fund Prize” for the best Outstanding Performance in the Master's Degree Examination at the University of Lagos (1981); British Council Study Fellow Award (1982 – 1985); Fellow of Science Teachers' Association of Nigeria (FSTAN) Award (2001); and “Man of the Year – 2002” award by the American Biographical Institute/Board of International Research, USA.

During his lifetime, he authored four textbooks, contributed 17 scholarly publications in journals, and presented 46 papers at various seminars, workshops and conferences, within and outside Nigeria .

Late Dr. Adeyegbe's last official engagement was his participation at the 32 nd Conference of the International Association for Educational Assessment (IAEA) in Singapore from 22 nd to 26 th May, 2006, where he presented a well applauded paper. After the conference, he proceeded to London on his annual leave and was expected back in the office on 20 th June, 2006. He however, passed away on Saturday, 3 rd June, 2006 at a London hospital, after a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife and four children.
